About me
I am a former physical education teacher and Past President of SHAPE Colorado. My passion has shifted over the years to being about using best, first instruction and best teaching practices to increase student learning, to serving, leading and advocating in the field of physical education and health education, locally and nationally and to expand my content knowledge about school health specifically around the Whole School, Whole Community Whole Child (WSCC) framework. I bring a unique perspective to our current conversations in equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), by being a child of color, growing up in a white world as a multicultural adoptee. Through connections and feedback, I've been empowered to share my personal struggles and learnings, in hopes that they will bring other individuals to brainstorm innovate ideas on how race, privilege and trauma can impact those who are having a difficult time navigating how to show up in the courageous conversations, as well as how these three issues can impact a child’s learning. Anyone who hears my story has the potential to leave with a new perception on how these hard conversations impact teaching and learning. My ability to talk authentically about trauma, race and privilege creates a space where adults can truly empathize with the challenges and struggles that children/students face on a daily basis. I am now seeking to educate others who will impact our children (most vulnerable populations, specifically) to be aware and intentional looking at data, planning, instructing/coaching, assessing and creating an inclusive and diverse environment that ensures equity for all.
